Arteta commits to Arsenal until 2030 in reported record deal
Mikel Arteta has committed his future to Arsenal, signing a new contract that keeps him at the Premier League champions until June 2030. The club announced the deal on Wednesday, days before Arsenal return to action at home to Leeds.
'A privilege'
Arteta's previous contract was due to expire at the end of this season. In a statement released by the club, the 44-year-old said it was a privilege to commit his future to Arsenal and to keep working with people who want the best for the club. According to the BBC, he also described the deal as only the beginning of Arsenal's success.
Co-chairs Stan and Josh Kroenke said they shared a special bond with Arteta and were excited about what lies ahead. ESPN reports that his coaching staff have also renewed their deals for four more years.
The Premier League's best-paid manager?
The financial terms have not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest the new contract makes Arteta the highest-paid manager in the Premier League. Newspaper reports put his salary at around £20 million a year, while the BBC says it is an increase on his previous salary of £10 million a year plus £5 million in bonuses. The BBC adds that Arteta benchmarked his value against Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone and former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
From rebuild to champions
Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, having previously worked as an assistant at Manchester City. He won the FA Cup within months of his appointment, and last season delivered the club's first Premier League title since 2004. Arsenal also reached the Champions League final in May, where they lost to Paris Saint-Germain.
He is now the longest-serving head coach in the Premier League. Sky Sports points out that in three years he will have spent a decade at the club and will still be the same age Arsene Wenger was when he was appointed by Arsenal.
The challenge this season
The new deal arrives at an interesting moment. According to Al Jazeera, Arsenal are second in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Manchester City, after a surprise 3-0 defeat to Brighton before the international break. City's title defence is complicated by their guilty verdict on financial charges, but on the pitch they have not dropped a point.
Arsenal begin the next phase of their season on Saturday lunchtime against Leeds at the Emirates, with kick-off at 11:30 Ghana time. Kai Havertz's fitness, after he left Germany duty with a minor muscle problem last month, is one of the main team-news questions.
Building a dynasty
For Arsenal, the message is about continuity. Having ended their long wait for a league title, the club clearly believes Arteta is the man to turn one success into a sustained era at the top. Whether that starts with back-to-back titles may depend on how quickly they can close the gap to City over the coming weeks.
