Coventry end 25-year wait with 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle
Coventry City ended a 25-year wait on Monday night. Frank Lampard's side beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena to record the club's first home win in the Premier League in a quarter of a century, and climb out of the relegation zone in the process.
An early gift
Newcastle made a sloppy start, and it cost them almost immediately. According to ESPN, goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček gave away a penalty in the opening minutes, and Jack Rudoni converted in the sixth minute to put Coventry ahead.
The hosts held that lead until half-time, and doubled it three minutes after the restart when Sidiki Cherif scored his first goal for the club, the club said.
Newcastle respond, Coventry finish strong
Newcastle dominated possession and finally got a foothold in the 70th minute, when Sven Botman struck a spectacular effort to make it 2-1. But Coventry finished the stronger. Ellis Simms restored the two-goal cushion, and Stephen Mfuni added a fourth with his first senior goal, finishing into the bottom corner after some neat footwork.
Newcastle had one late chance through William Osula, who beat the offside trap in stoppage time but sent his effort high and wide.
A night to remember
Coventry's official report described it as the club's first Premier League home triumph in 25 years. It was also their second successive league win, taking them to six points from six games and level with Manchester United, according to ESPN.
Lampard was quick to keep expectations in check, ESPN reports, insisting his side would not get carried away.
For Newcastle, it was a damaging defeat. They remain on eight points and slipped further behind leaders Manchester City.
