Arsenal have suffered one of the biggest upsets in League Cup history. Fourth-tier Fleetwood Town knocked Mikel Arteta's side out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, according to Sports Illustrated and Yahoo Sports.

Fleetwood's night

The League Two side took the lead in the 21st minute through Loupalo-Bi. Arsenal levelled five minutes into the second half through Viktor Gyökeres, but could not find a winner. With no extra time at this stage of the competition, the tie went straight to penalties.

Fleetwood scored all five of their spot-kicks. Bruno Guimarães, who scored Arsenal's winner against Leeds earlier this month, missed, according to Sports Illustrated.

A tough week for Arsenal

The defeat ends Arsenal's hopes of reaching a second successive League Cup final, after they lost to Manchester City at Wembley in March. It also comes days after Arteta criticised what he called a terrible fixture schedule, and with Bukayo Saka facing several weeks out with a quadriceps injury.

Arsenal remain level on points with City at the top of the Premier League, and their league and Champions League campaigns are still very much alive.

Liverpool survive marathon shootout

The pick of Wednesday's ties went to penalties too. Liverpool and Chelsea drew 1-1 at Anfield, and Liverpool won the shootout 6-5, according to ESPN.

Holders Manchester City also needed spot-kicks, beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad. Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0, Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham and Sunderland edged Brentford 3-2. In Tuesday's other tie, Bradford City beat Peterborough United 2-0.
