Havertz sends Arsenal top as Brighton stun City and United slide on
Update, November 3: This article has been updated with more Matchweek 9 results, including Everton's win at Newcastle on Monday night.
Arsenal are top of the Premier League. Kai Havertz's early goal gave the champions a 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday, a day after Manchester City were beaten at home by Brighton, and Mikel Arteta's side now lead the table by three points.
Havertz punishes Alisson
The only goal came in the 16th minute at Anfield. According to NBC Sports, an Alisson error allowed Havertz to score, with Declan Rice providing his fifth assist of the league season.
Liverpool dominated much of the game but could not find a way through. NBC Sports reports that the hosts had 19 shots without hitting the target once. Florian Wirtz came closest, curling a free-kick against the crossbar, while Alexis Mac Allister headed over from close range.
The result leaves Liverpool nine points off the pace, NBC Sports said.
Brighton end their Etihad hoodoo
Saturday brought another blow for City. Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute as Brighton won 1-0 at the Etihad, Tempo reported. It was Brighton's first away win at City in 18 attempts and City's second successive league defeat, following their loss at Aston Villa last weekend.
Brighton, who lost to City on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, move up to third with 19 points.
Martinez sees red as United's slide continues
Manchester United's crisis deepened with a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday. After United wasted several first-half chances, Morgan Rogers drove through their defence to score five minutes after the break, according to AFP. Lisandro Martinez was then sent off for two quick bookings, the second of which conceded a penalty that Cole Palmer converted for his 50th Premier League goal.
Sky Sports reports that United are now without a win in nine games in all competitions, their longest such run since 1984, and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside. AFP notes that the defeat leaves Michael Carrick's side just one point above the relegation zone, with his position under growing scrutiny. Chelsea move up to fourth.
Everton win again at Newcastle
Matchweek 9 ended on Monday night with Everton beating Newcastle 1-0 at St James' Park, their second win over Newcastle in four days after their Carabao Cup victory. Thierno Barry tapped in his fourth league goal of the season four minutes after half-time, and Newcastle's Jacob Ramsey was sent off in stoppage time, according to ESPN and NBC Sports. The win lifts David Moyes' side to seventh.
Elsewhere
Bournemouth beat Leeds 2-0, with Evanilson scoring early and Amine Adli adding a late second, according to NBC Sports. Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 thanks to a Nikola Milenković own goal and a strike from Igor Thiago, Hull and Ipswich drew 2-2, and Nicolas Jackson's goal was cancelled out by a Fulham equaliser that followed a goalkeeping error as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Fulham.
