Harry Kane's future looks set to stay in Bavaria. The Bayern Munich striker says talks over a new contract are close to completion, and the final details reportedly include a clause linked to his former club, Tottenham Hotspur.

Kane is in the last year of the four-year deal he signed when he joined Bayern from Spurs in 2023 in a move worth £86 million. Rather than run his contract down or seek a return to the Premier League, the 33-year-old has made clear he wants to extend his stay in Germany.

'Fairly close'

Speaking to The Independent while on England duty, Kane said the negotiations were going well and that an agreement was close, although a few issues still had to be ironed out. He added that he expected an announcement before too long and said he and his family are happy in Bavaria.

The talks began in earnest in late August. After Bayern's opening Bundesliga game of the season against VfB Stuttgart, Kane revealed that the first meeting had just taken place, stressing at the time that such matters are not settled in a week or two.

Bayern's leadership has sounded equally positive. Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen described the discussions as productive and indicated things should start to wrap up after the international break. Club president Herbert Hainer told Bild that Bayern want to extend Kane's contract and expect that to happen, while supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said last week he was optimistic a good solution would be found.

The Tottenham question

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the financial side of the deal is largely agreed. What remains, he reports, is the length of the new contract and how to handle the clause Kane has in his current deal regarding a possible Premier League return, including matching rights for Tottenham.

Reports suggest the new agreement could run until June 2029, although neither party has confirmed the terms. Any arrangement giving Spurs a say over a future move would be significant, keeping a door open to a return to north London that many supporters there have never stopped hoping for.

A prolific record

It is easy to see why Bayern are keen to keep him. Kane has scored 152 goals in 154 appearances for the club, including 64 in all competitions last season, and helped Bayern win the domestic double in 2025-26, scoring a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final.

Kane has said he feels comfortable with the team, the coach and the environment in Munich, and that staying at that level for as long as possible is his priority. He also believes remaining in Germany will help prolong his career.

Staying in the Bundesliga does mean his pursuit of Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League scoring record stays on hold. Kane remains 47 goals short of that mark.

What comes next

Kane's focus for now is on international football. He missed a penalty in England's 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain on Saturday, and remains with the squad for the rest of the window.

Bayern went into the break second in the Bundesliga, behind Borussia Dortmund, as they chase a third successive league title. If the club's own timeline holds, supporters may not have to wait much longer after the break for confirmation that their talisman is staying.
