Medeama go top as Kotoko win first game after Tinkler exit
Medeama SC are back on top of the Ghana Premier League after Matchday 5, while Asante Kotoko marked their first game since Eric Tinkler's departure with a much-needed win. It was a round that also saw Hearts of Oak held, Aduana come from behind and debutants Port City continue their impressive start.
Fixtures were spread across Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and according to GHSportsNews, the league has now passed the 100-goal mark for the season.
Kotoko respond after Tinkler exit
Kotoko opened the round on Thursday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, beating Karela United 1-0. Isaac Opoku Agyemang struck early in the first half, and the Porcupine Warriors held on for three points that ended a difficult week, coming just days after Tinkler asked to be released following the home defeat to Aduana.
The win lifts Kotoko to eighth on eight points, according to GHSportsNews. The technical team is continuing under Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo while the club looks for a permanent coach.
Medeama climb to the summit
Medeama secured an important away win at debutants Debibi United. After a goalless first half, Nana Kofi Babil broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, and the 1-0 win was enough to send Medeama to the top of the table, Adomonline reports.
FC Samartex stayed in the hunt with a 1-0 home win over Young Apostles, Christian Agyenim Boateng scoring on the stroke of half-time.
Aduana keep rolling
Aduana FC continued their strong start, but they had to work for it against Swedru All Blacks. The visitors went ahead after just four minutes through Williams Dankwah, before Stephen Amankona equalised in the 38th minute. Swedru were later reduced to ten men when Zayat Abubakari was sent off, and Amankona won it from the penalty spot in the 86th minute. His double has taken him to the top of the scoring charts.
Port City make another statement
Port City FC, playing their first season in the top flight, beat Bechem United 3-1. Hamza Zakari put them ahead in the 18th minute and Owusu Ansah doubled the lead before half-time. Francis Acquah pulled one back for Bechem early in the second half, but Ansah responded within minutes to complete his brace and seal the win.
Hearts held, goals elsewhere
Hearts of Oak could not find a way past Dreams FC in a goalless draw, and Vision FC and Bibiani Gold Stars also played out a 0-0. Basake Holy Stars edged Berekum Chelsea 1-0 thanks to Francis Asante's sixth-minute goal, while Heart of Lions beat ten-man FC AshantiGold 3-2 in an entertaining contest at the Kpando Stadium.
