Asante Kotoko are searching for a new head coach after Eric Tinkler asked to be released from his contract, less than three months into the job.

The club confirmed on Monday that its board had agreed to the South African's request to leave with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. Kotoko said both sides had held talks in an attempt to keep him in place, but ultimately respected his decision.

A short and uneven spell

Tinkler's exit came a day after Kotoko's first league defeat of the season, a 2-0 loss to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. That result left the Porcupine Warriors ninth in the Ghana Premier League table.

He was appointed in July following the club's eighth-place finish last term and was in charge for just four league matches: a 2-2 draw with Debibi United, a 2-1 win over Hearts of Lions, a 1-1 draw with Samartex and the defeat to Aduana. He does leave with one piece of silverware, having led Kotoko past rivals Hearts of Oak to win the Democracy Cup before the season began.

What happens next

For now, the technical team will continue under the direction of Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo. Kotoko return to action on Thursday, October 1, against Karela United.

Tinkler may not be out of work for long. According to 3News, the former Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United coach is set to take over at South African side Durban City, a job he was linked with before the club appointed Ben Youssef in June.
